Questions

I'm worried that this really isn't confidential -- I don't want my employer knowing I called or what I said. Can I trust EAP?

The EAP cannot share with your employer who came in or what they talked about without a release signed by you. They only get grouped statistics like the number of people who used which services so they can make sure EAP is being used. We take your privacy and confidentiality seriously!

Is this really free?

Yes! Your employer covers the cost of EAP services because they want to support you. They know the more you take care of your work or life issues the happier and more productive you will be!

Why does my company have an EAP in place?

Companies who take care of their employees' well-being have more productive, happier employees whose morale and attendance is better, who are more safe in the workplace, and who contribute to the bottom line. That's why the Return On Investment for EAP (see that article!) is high for companies who have an EAP in place and promote it well.

Do you have counselors near me?

We have counselors across the Hawaiian islands, as well as on the Mainland (and internationally for those employers who cover these employees). And, thanks to Telehealth, we have a specialist on another island that might be the best fit for you or your family. See the About Us page for a map of where our counselors are.

How does video counseling work?

Telehealth makes things much more convenient for most. We send you a link to a HIPPA-compliant (confidential) site, you click the link at the time of your session from your computer or smartphone, and you're in your counselor's waiting room. There's no downloading software. It's easy!!

Are you REALLY here in Hawaii?

Yes we are. We live here, work here, and love it here. We know Hawaii resources and providers. We know the unique island culture here and the challenges we face living in "paradise"! We support our partners as we shop in their stores, buy their cars, pump their gas, eat at their restaurants, ride their buses, and staycation in their hotels. (And because we're here we wouldn't tell someone that we have a provider an easy drive of 25 miles away -- from Oahu to Molokai -- as a Mainland EAP told someone!)

How long does it take for my company to get an EAP contract?

We make it easy and have done this the same day. We send a Proposal with pricing options. The company lets us know which model they choose (e.g. 3-visit or 6-visit) and we send a contract. They sign the contract, we countersign, and we send brochures, cards, posters, etc. We're ready to start seeing their employees immediately!

Can I use the services anonymously?

Probably not. We need to know what company you work at to make sure you're covered. We need to know who you are, your basic information (phone number, email) to communicate with you. To receive counseling, you need to sign an authorization that allows us to serve you and assures you of confidentiality.

What happens if I need more counseling than the EAP provides?

EAP counseling is short-term, solution-focused in nature and does not provide ongoing care. But your counselor knows this from the beginning, so their job is to fix what they can fix in the EAP sessions and if you need more, assess what you need and make a good referral for ongoing care from a provider they know and trust. (Sometimes it can even be themselves if they're on your insurance plan's panel.)

But my issue is really unique... I need a specialist.

There's a good chance we have a specialist in your issue on our panel, so when you call please let us know what it is you are looking for. If we don't have a specialist, we can refer you to a counselor who can assess your needs and make a good referral to a specialist they know and trust so you don't have to Google a provider!

I'm worried about my employee. What should I do?

Your company provides you with Management Consultation through the EAP, in addition to internal resources (e.g. HR). You can call us 24/7 to share your concern and get some suggestions on how to deal with the situation and support for your own well-being as a supervisor/manager. Making an informal referral to the EAP or a Supervisor Referral are helpful tools for managers to add to their toolbox.

Can you help my family member?

You can share your EAP benefits with the family members who live with you. If your spouse, kids, parents, auntie, partner, etc. needs help (and they live with you) we can help. It's best if you call us and request the help first (or let us know they will be calling). But we know when our ohana are struggling that impacts our own life and work and health.

Will my supervisor know I used the EAP?

Not unless you share that information. Supervisors may recommend the EAP, but they can't find out whether you used it or what you discussed unless you sign a release allowing this to happen. If you need to document that you attended a session, you can ask EAP for a letter stating you attended a session that day and share that with whoever you want, but we can't tell anyone you attended without your signed consent.

What if I need help right away?

We are here for you 24/7 and our phone lines are staffed 24/7 with professionals trained to handle urgent situations. They can provide immediate support and help connect you with the right level of care.

What if my counselor isn't a good fit? Can I change to a different one?

We do our best to match you with a provider that best fits your preferences, but that doesn't mean it's always perfect. That's why we allow you to switch providers at any point during your counseling process to ensure that you have someone who is the best fit for you. We have a large network of providers, so you have many options to choose from!

I work during your office hours. Can I take time off for my appointment?

Though our office hours are Monday-Friday 8am-5pm, we have counselors available outside of those hours (including on the weekends!) to accomodate you, so you don't have to miss any work. If you would like to schedule during your working hours, we recommend checking with your management team to see if they will accomodate that request first, since we are unable to excuse you from work.

Can I use my financial and/or legal consultation for work-related issues?

Though we do specialize in assisting with most work-related issues, we cannot help you with any legal or financial concerns that have to do with your workplace. This includes, but is not limited to: workman's compensation, FMLA, lodging a complaint against your employer, and bargaining for higher pay.

How many sessions do I get?

The number of sessions you are allotted varies by employer. If you'd like to know how much your company covers, call us and we can let you know!

How do I sign up/enroll for services?

As an employee of one of our covered companies, you are automatically able to use EAP services! You don't have to enroll or sign up, all you have to do is call our office at (808) 597-8222 and we'll get you set up with whatever service you're looking to use.

How soon can I get an appointment?

In most cases, we are able to offer a video or telephone appointment within 3 business days of your call. If you are looking for an in-person provider, we can typically offer an appointment within 5 business days. However, wait times can be slightly longer depending on counselor availability. If you need immediate help, we do have crisis counselors available via telephone 24/7 as well.
